Subject: COMPUTER HARDWARE REPAIR OVER THE
SUMMER
PLEASE PRINT THIS OUT
AND GIVE IT TO YOUR PARENTS
Class of 2009:
- Most
of your computers will be going out of warranty sometime in the very near
future unless your parents opted for the 4-year warranty. Therefore, if you are currently having any hardware issues, you should
get in touch with Dell ASAP.
- The
best way to do that is to go on support.dell.com. Once there, look for the “Contact
Technical Support … Chat Online with Technical Support” (or just click this link!) http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/chat/hardware_chat?c=us&l=en&s=gen
- On
those pages you will also find a tel. #, but believe me, you will be far
less frustrated if you use the online system. Either way, you will first need to note
the Service Tag # which can be
found on the bottom of the computer on a black and white tag so labeled.
- If
your parents have received a notice from Dell that the warranty is about
to expire and offering the opportunity to purchase an additional year,
they may seriously want to explore that option.
Classes of 2010 &
2011:
- This is only for broken hardware. IBM/Lenovo is not responsible for any
software issues. If you have
software issues that make the computer inoperable, depending on the nature
of the problem, you will either have to go to a local service company of your
choice, or wait until the fall when I can deal with it. Please make backups of your data!!!
- You
(your parents!) will have to contact IBM/Lenovo
Electronic Service Call https://www-930.ibm.com/support/esc/signin.jsp You will need to click on the “register
now” link & follow the instructions.
- Once
you have established yourself in their system, you will need to sign in,
click on Submit for Hardware
repair, and then Place a Request.
- Fill
in all the require contact info (red *s):
- In the
Machine Information area, the
machine type can be found on a black & white tag on the bottom that
says TYPE. The 1st 4
digits are the Machine Type, the 2nd 3 are the Model Type &
the last 7 with the L3 and the dash are the Serial Number. Class of 2010 has mostly 1871 machine
types, but a few have 2668 & 2669 which were upgraded models. Class of 2011 has mostly 1951 but
several have 2007, also an upgraded model.
- In the
area labeled Problem, you do
not need to give a part number or error code, but be sure to check the
severity as highest (1).
- In the
Comments/Problem description
area, within the limited space, describe what is wrong. If it is only a keyboard that is missing
keys, they will not have it sent to the factory, they will just send you a
keyboard with instructions on how to change it. Otherwise, they will send you a pre-paid
return DHL box with careful instructions on how to pack it up. It should be back to you within two or
three days of when you send it out.
I hope everyone has a wonderful, restful summer. Turn off the computer (occasionally), go
outside, ride your bike, read a book, but whatever you do, don’t stay hunched
over your computer all day!
